THE PHOTOVOICE JOURNEY: KENYA

Our photovoice journey began with a warm, interactive session involving 11 adolescents in grade 6,7, and 8 from two schools namely, Obinju Primary School and Manyatta Primary School. In meeting 1, we introduced the photovoice, purpose, explained the ethical guidelines, and trained participants on using smartphone cameras—how to access the camera, take and edit photos, and add captions.

Participants were introduced to guiding questions and instructed to avoid photographing people or unfamiliar areas. They practiced by taking photos in response to the question, “What makes you healthier?”. Majority choose to photograph the school farm—capturing their environment through a new lens. Their excitement was evident as they asked questions like, “What if the phone gets lost?” – demonstrating their interest in keeping this memory of a newly discovered skill.

Adolescent participants capturing what “being healthier” looks like.

The participating adolescents then reviewed and discussed their selected photos. They gathered around a laptop, reflecting on a peer’s image and connecting it to their own experiences.

Sharing stories – adolescents discussed the meaning behind their photos.

These discussions revealed shared insights such as the importance of clean water, nutritious food, sanitation, hygiene and safe spaces. Key insights were visually summarized on flip charts, offering a powerful snapshot of their voices. Their photos and narratives revealed both the challenges and opportunities they perceive in promoting health within their schools and communities.

Emerging themes as pasted on the walls.
