Co-Design Workshop on Urban Farming with Adolescents – Kisumu Kenya
Adolescents from Grades 6, 7, and 8 at Obinju and Manyatta Primary Schools in Kisumu Kenya participated in a co-design workshop on urban farming conducted by the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) team.
The facilitators opened the co-design workshop with warmth and intention, encouraging the adolescents to share their experiences, views, and expectations from the workshop.
Participants identified safe and meaningful spaces, and envisioned gardens filled with vegetables, and fruits. Facilitators shared a series of farm photos to ignite imagination and dialogue. The images prompted lively discussion on composting, and farming—laying the foundation for adolescent-led design ideas.
Participants further discussed water access, composting, and how students, teachers, and their parents could care for the garden together. Using drawings, discussions, and prototypes, they explored urban farming—and how it could support their wellbeing, learning, and community.
Finally, a facilitator read aloud the adolescents’ sticky notes filled with ideas, solutions, and creative designs.
